Oil and gas well optimisation and reservoir performance improvement Development and exploitation of oil and gas resources in increasingly difficult operating environments such as deepwater raises many technical challenges.
LIOS Technology’s optical temperature systems (OTS) address, in particular, the issue of rapid completion and production of lower-cost wells. Real-time, permanent production and reservoir monitoring is an indispensable technology for providing distinctive assurance and maximised profitability of these assets. It is the fundamental base for Real Time Field Management (RTFM). This is the key to maximizing the return on investment for the smaller reservoirs that are coming online today.
Recent developments in LIOS Technology’s fibre optic sensors have resulted in more reliable alternatives to conventional electronic systems for permanent, downhole production and reservoir surveillance. Permanent, in-well fibre optic sensors are now being developed and deployed in the field at an increasing rate. LIOS Technology’s distributed temperature sensing systems offer the unique ability to provide a reliable, non-intrusive means of continuous temperature logging of wells, enabling full coverage of complex and multilateral wells with a single optical fibre cable.
LIOS Technology’s sophisticated evaluation method, called Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), continuously monitors the temperature of an optic fibre at all points along its entire length. This gives petroleum engineers a powerful new tool for well and reservoir analysis, providing key information about where in the well the fluid is coming from. Accurate temperature data at every depth of the well allows monitoring of the inflow of perforations or injection profiles of injection wells. Temperature monitoring can also yield valuable insights into the production tubing integrity and gas lift performance. It can also monitor surface flow lines for insulation leaks, hydrate precipitation or wax deposits and is effective for leak detection in pipelines.
LIOS’ Distributed Temperature System does not require any electronics downhole, with the more complex components located on the surface, where they can be easily accessed and upgraded. It utilizes an absolutely passive sensor and comes in a simple package with few components, and delivers high reliability in harsh downhole
Permanent in-well sensing builds up comprehensive understanding:
- Flow line monitoring: ensures integrity and proper operational conditions
- Determines immediately changes to a well’s production characteristic
- Minimizes production disruption
- Downhole and reservoir monitoring: enhances oil and gas recovery
- Supplies in-flow distribution along reservoir
- Improves reservoir management strategies
- Increases production yields
- Reduces the number of well interventions
The temperature profile data, in any desired form or format, can be transmitted via standard interfaces from the OTS unit as required, and be either displayed or further processed by PC, PLC or SCADA systems. As a result of the increasing demands placed on the ability to network and integrate measuring systems into management systems, LIOS offers network components that summarise OTS data from several OTS units and transport or convert it to the required network standards and protocols like Modbus, DNP3, IEC60870-5 or XML based data interfaces (e.g. international protocol standard POSC WITSML for the oil and gas industry).
